BeskrivelseThe positionA PhD position is available at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology with the research group of Prof. Bjørn Olav Brandsdal and will be part of the research project “Evolutionary principles of biocatalysts from extreme environments” financed by the Research Council of Norway. The PhD candidate will be part of the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences (http://www.hylleraas.no). The Hylleraas Centre is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence, established by the Research Council of Norway in 2017 for a period of 10 years. About 70 scientists, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students in the field of theoretical and computational chemistry are active at the centre.The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.As a student, you will enter an international and collegial environment, and be enrolled in the Department of Chemistry PhD school (https://site.uit.no/phdchem/), and the Norwegian ‘BioCat Graduate School in Biocatalysis’, which provides top-level graduate courses in both scientific and transferable skills, arranges national PhD conferences and offers generous travel stipends for student research visits to collaborator laboratories.The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.The position’s field of researchThe successful candidate will become a member of an international and interdisciplinary research team focusing on the investigation and design of novel enzyme catalysts using computational and experimental methods (http://site.uit.no/cube). The candidate is expected to work together with collaborators at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University in Sweden and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bristol in UK.The appointed candidate will work with temperature dependence of chemical reaction rates and substrate binding using computer simulations to explore the fundamental principles of evolutionary enzyme adaptation. This knowledge will be used to design new enzymes with potential industrial applications. The candidate is also expected to spend up to 1 year at Uppsala University, Sweden and/or University of Bristol, UK.The candidate will also be involved in development and application virtual reality (VR) for visualisation and data analysis using the group’s VR lab facilities.ContactFor further information about the position and UiT is available by contacting Prof. Bjørn Olav Brandsdal: phone: +47 776 44057email: bjorn-olav.brandsdal@uit.noQualificationsThis position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field of chemistry, such as computational chemistry, quantum chemistry or biochemistry with an average of Norwegian equivalent grade of C or better on relevant courses. If you are near completion of your master’s degree, you may still apply.Applicants must document document proficiency in English that satisfies the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, either as a native language, via undergraduate education in a Nordic country, or by test scores as described below. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma. Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is also desirable due to teaching obligations.Previous experience with machine learning, molecular dynamics simulations, hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics and/or quantum mechanics is required. Software development and use of free energy methods will also be considered favorably. Both a strong academic record and a genuine interest in conducting research are essential to qualify for the position. This must be demonstrated by your Master’s thesis, academic record, and other application materials (see below).In the assessment, the emphasis is on the applicant's potential to complete a research education based on the master's thesis or equivalent, and any other scientific work, relevant research experience and academic performance and teaching experience and/or qualifications. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.Admission to the PhD programme For employment in the PhD position, you must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology and participate in organized doctoral studies within the employment period.Admission normally requires: A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a master's degree, or an integrated master's degree.UiT normally accepts higher education from countries that are part of the Lisbon Recognition Convention. In order to gain admission to the programme, the applicant must have a grade point average of C or better for the master’s degree and for relevant subjects of the bachelor’s degree.
