PhD Research Fellow in Decision Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Applied to Geo-steering
Arbeidsgiver NORCE Stillingstittel PhD Research Fellow in Decision Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Applied to Geo-steering Frist 15.11.2023 Ansettelsesform Engasjement
PhD Research Fellow in Decision Analysis and Artificial Intelligence in Geo-steering [Distinguish] About the positionWe have a full-time cross-disciplinary PhD position available in the fields of Decision Analysis, Artificial Intelligence and Geosciences at NORCE Technology in Bergen, Norway. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years at NORCE, and you will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Stavanger (UiS).The position is within a joint industry project “DISTINGUISH: Decision support using neural networks to predict geological uncertainties when geosteering", funded by the Research Council of Norway and Norwegian industry. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to strengthen our enthusiastic research group Data Assimilation and Optimization, working at the forefront of ensemble-based data assimilation methodology, optimization under uncertainty and decision support through combining data and models. The position is available from 01.02.2024 and we expect that the candidate can start the position no later than 01.05.2024.Project background and work tasksThe position is within an interdisciplinary research project “DISTINGUISH: Decision support using neural networks to predict geological uncertainties when geosteering", funded by the Research Council of Norway and Norwegian industry. The ability to fine-tune well positioning in real-time through geosteering increases the potential value of wells and minimizes risks. Geosteering is essential for petroleum and penetrates other types of drilling, including geothermal projects, civil wells and tunnels, and soon CO2 storage wells. Currently, geosteering decisions rely on fast-paced manual interpretation of real-time data, which needs to consider pre-job modeling, geological setting, and embedded uncertainties. “Given the pace of drilling, the person in charge of geosteering is hard-pressed just to interpret the incoming data, much less contemplating the uncertainty in it" (Rassenfoss, 2022, SPE JPT). Following the newest trends in the industry geosteering workflow of the future shall capture and update uncertainty in an ensemble of geomodels. The most advanced ensemble methods are the core of closed-loop reservoir management (EnCLRM), the new standard for optimizing the development of petroleum fields. However, EnCLRM is not fast enough for real-time operations due to the involved geomodelling complexity. We plan to remove this complexity by creating new Generative-Network (GN) geomodels. GN-geomodels “learn geology" before the operation and have sub-second performance. They unlock next-generation data assimilation and new predictive decision-support AI. DISTINGUISH will develop these technologies and combine them into the “geosteering workflow of the future." It proposes a new way of thinking substituting “depth of detection" with “distance of prediction" and probabilistic decision support. This position is primarily dedicated to developing new methods that can provide reliable real-time decision support with sufficient predictive capabilities based on a statistical ensemble of GN-geomodels. Additionally, the PhD candidate shall contribute to early testing decision-support system developed in the project with user partners. Note that, University of Bergen is also announcing another PhD position within the same project that will focus on generative machine learning with geoscience applications. The project is a collaboration of NORCE, the University of Bergen, the University of Stvanger, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Campus (HWU), and the industrial partners. The successful candidate should be prepared to travel and will have an opportunity to communicate the research to industry. A long-term research stay at HWU is also a planned opportunity.About the research trainingAs a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD program at at the Faculty of Science and Technology of UiS is 2 months after you start your research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a necessary that you satisfy the enrolment requirement for the PhD program at the UiS: https://www.uis.no/en/admission-to-phd-programmes (https://www.uis.no/en/admission-to-phd-programmes)The supervisory team for this PhD position will be Sergey Alyaev (NORCE) and Dan Sui (UiS)The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g., research fellow, research assistant).Your profile, qualifications and skillsApplicants must hold a MSc degree or equivalent education in one of the following fields: applied mathematics, statistics, computational engineering, computer science, geosciences. In case your MSc degree has not been awarded, the master's thesis should be submitted for assessment within 2023 and made available for consideration to the hiring team.
