The topic for the PhD project is to translate results from geological and geophysical interpretation of the soil stratigraphy into geotechnical soil parameters applicable for design of foundations and anchors for offshore wind turbines. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The PhD position is a part of the 4SWIND-project managed by the department of Earth Science and Bergen Offshore Wind Centre at the University of Bergen. The project is financed by the Research Council of Norway, Equinor and Geoprovider.  The goals of the 4SWIND (Advancing seismic seabed survey techniques and optimizing site-selection for offshore wind farms) project are to (1) Develop state-of-the-art, cost-effective, and fit-for purpose site survey methods for offshore wind farm anchor and foundation systems that can aid planning of offshore wind sites, and (2) develop detailed reference datasets with quantified geotechnical, stratigraphical, and morphological parameters of different landforms on the Norwegian continental shelf. These datasets will be utilized to give bounds for properties of similar landforms observed elsewhere and create a predictive framework for offshore wind at stages from site selection to survey planning and anchor/foundation planning. This PhD project is an integral part of the 4SWIND project. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Gudmund Eiksund (NTNU).Your immediate leader is a professor.Duties of the positionThe work will involve:Mandatory course work as part of the PhD-educationA study of anchor types, anchor design principles and mooring analysis with the aim to identification of geotechnical soil parameters relevant for anchor designTo study correlations between geological and geophysical character of sediments and geotechnical soil parameters. This will include both offshore surveys and lab work organized by the 4SWIND project and existing databases of offshore soil properties.Writing conference and journal papersRequired selection criteriaYou must have a professionally relevant background in civil engineeringYour education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's levelYou must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale.
