The Approval Centre Europe (M-SA) within Maritime Ship Classification consists of six production departments, located across three different locations (Gdynia, Hamburg and Oslo (Høvik)). The Fire Safety & Life-Saving Plan Approval section is part of the Approval Centre in DNV Maritime Ship Classification. The Approval Centre is approving ship newbuildings and conversions to ensure that they comply with international requirements, for all relevant technical disciplines. In addition, approval of components and equipment placed onboard is carried out here. The Approval Centre also has an important role in developing applicable requirements.As an approval engineer in our unit, you will become part of a highly qualified team focusing on fire safety and life-saving arrangements onboard ships. We are working with various ship types, such as cargo ships, passenger ships, naval vessels and high-speed light crafts. Our responsibilities span over a broad range of tasks which provides a great deal of diversity as well as deep insight into statutory matters. The focus on decarbonization, digitalization and automation also affect our work. Currently, fire safety and live-saving aspects related to introduction of alternative fuels (such as batteries and gas fuel) are examples of focus areas. Another new focus area is fire safety requirements for autonomous vessels. As we are responsible for the technical content of DNV’s governing documents for fire safety and life-saving (e.g. class rules) we develop new and existing requirements continuously. This is done in cooperation with other technical disciplines internally, with flag administrations and other contributors in the maritime industry. The rule development work provides our section with deep insight into DNV rules and class notations, different maritime codes and international industry standards and regulations.We continuously strive at being perceived as a highly competent resource unit by giving valued support to both external customers and our DNV stations worldwide.
