Post-Doc Position: Carbonate Geochemistry and Petroleum Systems
Arbeidsgiver NGU Stillingstittel Post-Doc Position: Carbonate Geochemistry and Petroleum Systems Frist 23.10.2023 Ansettelsesform Prosjekt
Vacant Post-Doc Position: Carbonate Geochemistry and Petroleum SystemsThe Marine Geology section at NGU (Geological Survey of Norway) has a vacant post-doc position as part of the project “Carbonate geochronology and petroleum systems”. The position is available for a period of two years, starting December 2023.
Research Project and Responsibilities The aim of the project is to use recent methodological advances to study carbonate successions of the Norwegian continental shelf. Furthermore, we aim to reconstruct evolution histories of sedimentary basins and petroleum systems as recorded by multigeneration carbonate minerals. Aided by detailed sedimentologic, petrographic and geochemical characterization of carbonate successions, as well as identification of primary components and secondary cements, the project will constrain the ages of individual carbonate generations using U-Pb geochronology. Trace-element mapping and in situ U-Pb dating of carbonate samples will be carried out in a LA-ICP-MS laboratory (193 nm excimer laser, QqQ-ICP-MS, and multicollector ICP-MS) at NGU.We are looking for an independent and professionally motivated geologist or geochemist who will work both independently and as part of a team with NGU colleagues and industry partners. As our new post-doc you will also be part of a competent working environment that strives to meet both academic and societal challenges within most aspects of the geology discipline. You will have the opportunity to participate in field work, describe and sample drill cores and run analytical sessions at LA-ICPMS laboratory. An essential part of the project is to present the results in scientific publications and at academic meetings.
Necessary QualificationsPhD in geology/geochemistry or an equivalent disciplineStrong background in geology, ideally with experience in carbonate isotope geochemistry, petrography and sedimentologyExperience with mass spectrometry and data reductionPublishing skillsDesired Qualifications Experience using LA-ICPMS for trace-element mapping and U-Pb dating. LA-ICP-MS laboratory at NGU is equipped with 193 nm excimer laser, QqQ-ICP-MS, and multicollector ICP-MS.Experience working with petrographic thin-section and identifying primary carbonate components and secondary cements.
Personal qualities At NGU we emphasize the ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team. We can offer an amicable and professional working environment, scientific challenges, and good possibilities for international collaboration. Our researchers are expected to contribute to dissemination of geology to users of NGU’s national maps and data, to national and international research communities, and to society in general.
We offer Salary is regulated by the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service, researcher code 1109, from NOK 580,000 to NOK 830,000 gross per year depending on qualifications.
