Job description and context:We invite applications for a 2-year full-time researcher position with possibility of extention for a scientific study on the importance of early risk factors to psychosis development in adolescents at Diakonhjemmet Hospital, Oslo, Norway, in close collaboration with the Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT, http://www.med.uio.no/norment/english) TOP-Study at the University of Oslo. The project “Uncovering novel clinical characteristics, risk factors and brain phenotypes across the spectrum of adolescent psychosis” is funded by the Norwegian Research Council with a grant to Psychiatrist and Professor Emeritus Ingrid Agartz. The adolescent psychosis study “Youth-TOP” was started in 2012 and to date comprises a biobank and a database of over 200 youths with psychosis and healthy teenagers investigated with MRI and cognitive and clinical test batteries. The TOP-project including Youth-TOP, has the aim to obtain knowledge about causes and treatment of severe mental illness, and has during the past 20 years built a large research register and biobank. The Youth-TOP Study uses advanced neuroimaging methods to characterize brain phenotypes. In this project we will determine the association of a diverse spectrum of risk factors to brain phenotypes and psychosis development in adolescent psychosis and collaborating clinical youth cohorts. An array of putatively early risk markers (obstetric complications from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN), placental risk genes, gene markers, immune markers), will be used to test for interactions between genetic and non-genetic risk factors modulating brain phenotypes which associate with psychosis development. Data from other samples from child psychiatric or neurodevelopmental studies and the Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa; https://fhi.no/en/studies/moba) will be included to cover as large a spectrum of childhood onset psychosis or neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood as possible. The candidate will be affiliated with the NORMENT Imaging Psychosis Research Group (https://www.med.uio.no/klinmed/english/research/groups/imaging-psychosis/) which allows for a close interaction with imaging researchers in the adolescent psychosis field. As part of NORMENT, we have extensive experience in using large scale, multisite “big-data” approaches including state-of-the-art brain imaging. Both NORMENT, University of Oslo, and Diakonhjemmet Hospital are equal opportunity workplaces, which encourage and promote the research of all employees, independent of gender, age, or ethnic background.
Main duties and responsibilities:
To generate new hypotheses and take the lead towards completion of scientific papers. To analyze already obtained data from clinical cohorts; biomarkers, immune, genetic and neuroimaging data and to exploit the unique Scandinavian and Norwegian resources (national registers, the MoBa birth cohort) for additional data collection. To develop national and international collaborations to advance and expand the field to include additional neurodevelopmental youth cohorts. To interact and collaborate with fellow researchers and take responsibility for aspects of the adolescent data collection.
Qualifications:
The candidate must be qualified to apply as a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine or the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Oslo (https://www.uio.no/english/research/).Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in biology, psychology, neuroscience, medicine, or other relevant fields and have at least one previous postdoctoral period within the field of early risk and psychosis disorders, or a related field of research. Knowledge of advanced statistical methods is necessary as high-level performance is expected. Basic research experience related to MRI, neuroscience, biological psychiatry or mental health or psychosis research, will be regarded as a substantial strength. Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required.Ability to work independently, organized and focused, but also to positively interact with a fellow research group and willingness to take on students is necessary.Excellent communication and collaborative skills are required.Interest in performing and promoting Open Science practices will be regarded as a strength.A sense of responsibility and motivation with regard to the research field is appreciated.Responsibility for the coordination of research collaboration is a merit.
